Problem:

SPG’s client, a sporting goods retailer distribution center, was housed in a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse bursting at the seams with pallets stacked in almost every aisle.  Their paper based order-picking system required days to pull, pack and ship an order.  As the client was moving to a new location, the company needed its new warehouse designed.  And why not add an additional challenge? Implement a new ERP/ WMS to coincide with the opening of the new facility.

Solution:

SPG was engaged to design the new warehouse while working side-by-side with the original architect of the ERP software to implement a best-in-breed ERP/ WMS system.  SPG co-led the client’s project team through a thorough analysis of existing processes vs. future best practices.  Procedures were significantly revamped. With pick zones created, upgrades in material handling equipment, efficient slotting strategies employed and the new completely paperless software system humming, orders moved through the new 110,000 sq. ft. facility fluidly and quickly.

Results:

The client went live in only 3-1/2 months, completely moved in with all systems go.  They were able to maintain pre-go-live staff levels while doubling output in 40% less time while saving AT LEAST $200,000 in annual labor costs.
